Our Honeymoon At The Enjo Nature Farm

How to spend a very special honeymoon where time stands still?

The next day, after our wedding at the beach of Llundudno, we traveled to a wonderful place called “Enjo Nature Farm”, where we wanted to enjoy our honeymoon or the first days of our marriage.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

The “Enjo Nature Farm” is one of those extraordinary places, where time seemingly goes much slower than normal. The poor gravel roads stop you from whizzing past the few sheep farms and encourage you to savour their traditional buildings and unkempt fields. The lack of cell phone, internet and TV reception forces you to be in the here and now, to soak up the spirit of the nature of the amazing landscape of the Cederberg.

Its setting in the Biedouw Valley is not only scenically stunning, but has a quality that only the most remote places offer โ€“ that sense of total peace, tranquillity, and solitude. Where the only sounds are purely natural โ€“ the rustling of the wind, trickling of the river, bird songs, distant baboon cries. It forces you to let go of those daily encounters, worries and stresses, and recharge your batteries with peaceful and renewed energy within hours.

The “Enjo Nature Farm” is set more or less halfway down Biedouw Valley with just 6 cottages and a small campsite at the river. We booked the Lonely Planet Cottage for December before Christmas, long before we planned our wedding. We had been very lucky that we got the wedding date exactly one day before that little trip to the Cederberg. So everything fits perfectly!

The “Lonely Planet” is the most remote and private cottage they have on its property. It’s situated in the beautiful Oskloof and you can access it via a Jeep track. It is about a five minutes drive from the farmhouse. The cottages are rustic, but the comfortable beds, warm showers, well equipped kitchen, indoor fire place, outdoor braai, and stunning location make up for the lack of luxury and let you feel that you are on a lonely planet.

We also had a little jacuzzi made of natural stones which is filled with fresh spring water. The jacuzzi is located slightly higher behind the cottage. At the evening of our arrival we just grab a cool “Savana Light” and jumped into that jacuzzi to enjoy the silence and the  landscape, which opened up with 360 degree breathtaking view. The vastness of this wide and open landscape, the big blue skies, and the different dusty brown tones make it a photographers dream at any time.

One of our highlights was always the night time in the Cederberg Karoo.

One night the Farm offered us to prepare a typical South African braai (barbecue), which we could enjoy outside the cottage at the fireplace. All ingredients of the braai dinner were from their own production or of neighboring farms. They prepared for us this special and unforgettable dinner in such a beautiful way, as you can see on the pics. I love the rustic and vintage way of living, which brings you back in the here and now and let your life slow down.

While our braai was waiting to be finished on the outside fireplace, we enjoyed again a cool “Savana Light” and watched the sun slowly set beneath the mountains of the valley. A beautiful pink hue was reflected on the opposite hillside. The peace and quiet was suddenly broken by a chorus of well-hidden frogs and the hooting of owls in the distance. I used the beautiful light to allow a few more pages in my book before it got dark.

Darkness happens quickly this time of year. Followed by an array of stars and slowly but surely the Milky Way arrives in its full glory, while random shooting stars burn out in the atmosphere.

On our last day at the “Enjo Nature Farm” we took our time to explore the surrounding around the Farm. We met free living horses and even a cobra who has been drinking the water from our pool. As well we found some idyllic corners on that property to invite you to relax. Like sun chairs on the bank of a small river or a swing that hangs under a big old tree.

Even the little shop in the main farmhouse needs some time to explore. They have plenty of rooibos teas, made on the neighboring farm, handmade cosmetics made of native plants and foods like biological honey and self-made ginger lemonade. I bought three amazing cremes, which I will tell you about  in an upcoming post.

Unfortunately we had to leave this stunning and magical place after two relaxing days. But I knew that we would return home with an enhanced appreciation of the power of nature. Maybe that is because there are just a handful of people stretched across many kilometres along the Biedouw Valley and your next door neighbour lives 20 mins drive over a corrugated grid road away. Or maybe because we are not distracted by modern technology in these out of the way places. Whatever it is, the Cederberg is one of the most stunning and magical destinations in South Africa that gonna keep drawing us back again, for sure.

I hope you enjoyed this little honeymoon-travel-journal and maybe it forced you to visit this place as well. I can highly recommend it and it is not only for honeymoon.

Next time I will write about “Wupperthal”  the isolated and quaint village calls itself โ€œthe village where time stood stillโ€.

Have a good start into a new week.

All the best,

Katy
